Goal Setting for Gen X Entrepreneurs

Quarterly Goal Setting

The end of the year is a great time to check in and see how you are progressing toward your BIG PICTURE vision for your business. But, just like New Year’s resolutions, annual goals need attention and nurturing to succeed. Enter quarterly goal setting for Gen X entrepreneurs.

It’s too easy to lose sight of your big goals if you’re not checking in regularly. This is where quarterly planning shines. It breaks down your yearly ambitions into more manageable chunks, allowing you to adjust and refine your path every few months, rather than waiting for year-end to realize you’ve drifted off course.

Big-Picture Planning

When it comes to achieving your big-picture goals, yearly and quarterly planning are essential for staying on track. Setting clear, measurable objectives for each quarter helps break down larger goals into manageable steps. But the real key to success is in how you track your daily progress.

GEN X Framework

Once you’ve set your quarterly goals, keep them nearby. But now the real work begins.

Start to implement the GEN X framework—a practical daily tool that ensures your actions stay in line with your larger objectives, every single day.

The GEN X framework allows you to regularly reflect on your decisions, results, and expectations, so every action you take is in the service of growing and maintaining a successful, profitable business. The framework empowers you to learn from your actions and continuously improve, and it releases you from chasing every newsletter, tip, and subscription from online experts.

GEN X Check In

  • Greatness: What greatness did I achieve today?
  • Earnings: How much did I earn today?
  • Navigate: What new action did I take today?
  • Xpectations: How will what I did today empower me to achieve my goals tomorrow?

Quarterly Planning: A Deep Dive

Step 1: Define or Review Your Quarterly Goals

If you haven’t already done so, define three to five big-picture goals for the quarter. These goals should be clear and measurable, and at least one of them should be directly tied to revenue.

For example, if you aim to increase revenue by 15%, break down how you will make that happen, whether by adjusting pricing, improving outreach, or expanding offerings.

Quarterly Goals: A Template

  • Professional Goal: By the end of this year, I want to [launch a new product / grow my client base by X% / transition to full-time entrepreneurship].
  • Financial Goal: My target is to earn [insert specific number or %] this quarter through [specific services, product sales, or revenue streams].
  • Personal Goal: I plan to [achieve work-life balance / improve my health / spend more time with family] by [adjusting work hours / setting boundaries / scheduling regular breaks].

Step 2: Reflect on What You’ve Learned Through Prior Actions

Before finalizing your goals, take a moment to reflect on what steps you’ve already taken and what you’ve learned from those actions. This step isn’t about absorbing information from strangers—it’s about trying things, observing what worked and what didn’t FOR YOU, and adjusting your strategy accordingly.

Consider where you excelled and where you can improve. Make sure your goals for the next quarter are influenced by these insights.

If you need help, use the quarterly planning template from the previous section and ask yourself why you arent already there>

Step 3: Break Your Goals into Monthly Targets

Once your quarterly goals are set, outline monthly milestones. Each milestone should contribute directly to your larger goals.

For instance, if one of your goals is to increase sales, a monthly target might be sending a set number of pitches or updating (or even creating) your pricing structure.

These quarterly targets should be less about big-picture goals and more about specific actions you can take. Remember you can’t control how people respond to your pitches, but you can control modifying your pitches. to be more effective.

Step 4: Plan and Record Weekly Actions

Now, further break your monthly milestones into weekly actions. These weekly plans give you a short-term focus and keep you from feeling overwhelmed by the bigger goals.

Once you’ve set your weekly goals, enter them in your calendar or your goal tracker. Do this all at once.

Don’t for each week to roll around.

enter them all now. The act of writing your goals will help you emphasize them. Then, every Monday, your calendar reminder will remind you of your promise to yourself.

Each week, use the GEN X framework to design specific actions that will move you forward.

Tools for Tracking Your Progress

Step 5: Use the GEN X Daily Check-In

Finally, check in with yourself every day using the GEN X framework. Do this check in before the current day ends, while things are still fresh in your mind.

The GEN X Daily Check-In Defined

  • Greatness: Celebrate a small or big win from your day. This is so critical to your progress, as there are days as an entrepreneur where things can feel bleak. But when you see 20 or thirty wins you can review, you’ll remind yourself of the good you are doing. This will also help you track if you are repeating your greatness too many times. If you sign a client today, send a proposal tomorrow, meet with them the next day, your wins will start to feel similar and you’ll start to shoot for more wins, rather than relying on repeating variatons of the same wins.
  • Earnings: Staying in business means earning money. Period. You need to track your earnings every single day. If you didn’t sell anything today, why? What can you change tomorrow. As you set up a creator career, in particular, it can feel like you need to “plan” or “set up” a lot. Try to limit long periods where no revenue is coming in, even if you have to take a short step back.
  • Navigate: Identify the actions you took that brought you closer to greatness and earnings. Did they move the needle? What could you improve?
  • Xpectations: Set your plan for tomorrow. What’s next.
