PCR: The Shortest (and Most Powerful) AI Prompt

Why strategic clarity beats “doctoral dissertation” prompting every time.

If you’ve been following AI trends, you’ve probably noticed the latest fixation: the rise of the “only prompt you’ll ever need.” To quote Alicia Silverstone: as if.

These singular prompts often read like doctoral dissertations. They’re loaded with backstory, meta-instructions, nested frameworks, and enough context to qualify as a small book. Somewhere along the way, we decided that more input must equal better output.

But wasn’t AI supposed to save us time—not bury us under a 20-page treatise on becoming a “better you”?

I’m a simplifier by nature. My brain already runs a constant loop of what-ifs and probability checks; I don’t need more clutter competing for mental real estate. So when it comes to AI—and strategic planning—I default to clarity over complexity.

The best prompt I’ve ever used—the one I return to again and again when making real business decisions—starts with just three letters:

PCR (Pros, Cons, Recommendations).

AI Should Drive Clarity, Not Complexity

Most people approach AI as if the goal is volume. More ideas. More options. More analysis. More material to sift through.

But generating more ideas isn’t the problem most leaders face. Clarity is.

We’re already surrounded by unsolicited advice and endless opinions. The last thing you need is your AI adding to the confusion. When you’re deciding whether to raise your prices, pivot your offer, invest in a tool, or shift your positioning, you don’t need thousands of words of AI-generated possibilities.

You need a sharper understanding of the decision itself.

PCR forces that shift. It turns AI from a content machine into a thinking partner. Instead of asking it to generate more, you’re asking it to compress—to surface what actually matters. It’s a decision-compression framework that collapses complexity into short insights you can act on.

The PCR Framework

The power of PCR isn’t the brevity of the three letters—it’s the clarity of the question you bring to it. A vague prompt like “Should I use Instagram?” won’t get you anywhere. But a concrete decision framed with PCR does half the work before the AI even responds.

The structure gives you a clean, balanced breakdown:

  • Pros: Surfaces the upside and validates the “why” behind your idea.
  • Cons: Exposes the trade-offs and the hidden opportunity costs.
  • Recommendations: Provides conditional paths forward based on your specific constraints.

Real business decisions aren’t binary. They’re conditional. They depend on timing, resources, goals, and—yes—even emotion. Recommendations clarify when something makes sense, for whom, and what must already be true before you act.

Do the Right Things, Not all the Things

The decisions that drive real growth aren’t about doing more. They’re about doing the right things. And the right things almost always come back to a single question:

Are you creating a meaningful transformation for the people you serve?

PCR brings that question to the surface. It strips away distractions and gets to the heart of the matter: what you gain, what you lose, and what your customers gain or lose as a result of your choice.

Simplicity in strategy is deceptively difficult. It requires discipline, focus, and a willingness to ignore all the shiny distractions that masquerade as opportunity. But when you get it right, everything gets easier.

PCR works because it helps you Think. Understand. Decide.

If a decision can’t survive a clean PCR, it’s probably not ready to be made.

SIDEBAR: PCR Under the Hood

On its own, AI doesn’t inherently understand your frameworks—it only knows what you’ve trained it to prioritize. So, if you open a fresh AI window and type “PCR,” the AI will likely try to give you a DNA test or a medical breakdown.

PCR only works as a “power prompt” because of the strategic context sitting beneath the hood.

All decisions are contextual. Ask a child for a PCR on “ice cream before dinner” and you’ll get an emphatic YES. Ask a dentist and you’ll get a different answer. AI is no different; it needs to know what you are optimizing for before those three letters mean anything.

How to Bake in Context The best way to do this is to use Claude Projects or a Custom GPT. These features allow you to upload your business “DNA” (or AI Creative Brief) once so it’s always present:

  • Upload your files: Upload your business plan, your values, or a creative brief. This is the “Knowledge” the AI draws from.
  • Set the Persona: I instruct my AI to act like Mark Cuban—direct, focused on unit economics, and quick to kill ideas that don’t work.
  • Define the Framework: I tell it explicitly: “When I ask for a PCR, I want a breakdown of Pros, Cons, and Recommendations tailored to my business model.”

My Execution
Once the foundation is set, I don’t have to repeat myself. I just bring the problem:

The Prompt
“PCR: I’m considering shifting my 1:1 consulting to a group coaching model. Give me the breakdown.”

The Bottom Line

Starting with three letters (PCR) isn’t about oversimplifying. It’s about doing the hard work of defining your context upfront, so the decision-making process becomes effortless later.
