The CRAFT Prompt Framework for Better AI Results
Why your AI outputs are not inspiring (and how to fix it)

You’ve been using AI for a year. Maybe two. And your outputs still sound like they were written by a committee of no one, for an audience that has already seen this content before.
That, however, is not an AI problem. That’s a prompting problem.
Most people treat AI like a vending machine β put in a vague request, shake it a little, get disappointed with what falls out. But AI isn’t a vending machine. It’s not a search engine either. It’s a thinking partner that reflects back exactly as much precision as you put in. Which means if your inputs are fuzzy, your outputs will be too.
The CRAFT Framework fixes that. It’s a five-part structure that gives AI the direction it needs to stop guessing and start delivering β specific, usable, sounds-like-you results.
Think of AI as an eager intern, ready to help, but one who still needs careful guidance.

The CRAFT Framework
If you want better AI outputs, skip the generic prompts like “write a blog post.” Use the CRAFT to get specific, actionable results that elevate your AI outputs.
- C – Context: Give AI the background it needs
- R – Role: Tell it who to be
- A – Action: Define exactly what you want
- F – Format: Specify how you want the output
- T – Tone: Set the voice and feeling

Why CRAFT Works
Think of AI this way: It’s made up of billions of data points. So, when it answers any prompt, it averages across those data points – with no weight or preference to “good” results vs. “bad results.”
So, when you fine tune your prompt, you help eliminate the data sets that don’t have any bearing on the results you’re seeking.
Each CRAFT element serves a specific purpose:
- Context gives AI the background it needs to make relevant suggestions. You wouldn’t ask a mechanic to fix a restaurant’s marketing strategy, nor should AI do the same.
- Role activates the right knowledge and perspective. Similarly, asking AI to perform a certain role constrains results to more specific mindsets.
- Action defines exactly what you need accomplished. This is key. When you say “give me a social media post” AI has no idea if you mean a pithy joke, a dog video or a thought leader piece. Define exactly what you want to get the best results.
- Format ensures you get usable output structured how you need it. Like when you get a LONG essay when all you wanted was five bullet points.
- Tone matches the voice and feeling your work requires. AI can be funny, snarky, reverential, sometimes all at once. How do you want it to sound?
Without these elements, AI defaults to the middle-of-the-road responses that help no one.
Think of AI this way: It’s made up of billions of data points. So, when it answers any prompt, it averages across those data points – with no weight or preference to “good” results vs. “bad results.”

π‘ What is Prompt Engineering?
Prompt engineering is the practice of designing and refining the instructions you give to AI systems to get more accurate, useful, and consistent results. Think of it as learning the “language” that helps AI understand exactly what you need.
While prompt engineering can get quite technical (involving concepts like few-shot learning, chain-of-thought reasoning, and parameter tuning), the fundamentals are accessible to anyone. The CRAFT framework gives you the essential prompt engineering principles that make the biggest difference in everyday AI useβno technical background required.
Whether you’re a marketer, artist, writer, or entrepreneur, understanding these basics puts you ahead of the 90% of people still barking orders at AI like “write something good” instead of actually managing their AI intern with clear direction and context.
The CRAFT Framework in Action
Example 1: Grant Writing for Arts Organizations
β Generic Prompt:
Write a grant proposal for our arts program.
β CRAFT-Enhanced Prompt:
Context: We’re a community arts center in a rural town of 8,000 people. Local youth have limited creative opportunities, and we’ve seen a 40% increase in teen mental health issues since COVID. We want to launch a year-round youth arts mentorship program pairing high schoolers with professional artists.
Role: Act as a grant writer specializing in community development and youth programming for rural arts organizations.
Action: Write a compelling project description for a $50,000 foundation grant that demonstrates community need, shows measurable impact, and connects to the funder’s priorities around youth development and mental health.
Format: Structure it with: compelling opening statement, clear problem definition, detailed program description, timeline, budget summary, and impact measurement plan. Keep to 2 pages maximum.
Tone: Professional but heartfelt, emphasizing community connection and transformative potential without being overly emotional.
Result: Instead of generic grant-speak, you get a tailored proposal that speaks directly to your community’s specific needs and the funder’s interests.

Example 2: Cultural Tourism Marketing
β Generic Prompt:
Create social media content for our cultural tourism business.
β CRAFT-Enhanced Prompt:
Context: We run authentic weaving workshops on a Navajo reservation, targeting culturally-conscious travelers aged 30-55 who value authentic experiences over touristy attractions. Our workshops teach traditional techniques while sharing stories about contemporary Native life. Peak season is March-October.
Role: Act as a cultural tourism marketing specialist who understands the balance between sharing authentic culture and respecting cultural boundaries.
Action: Create a month’s worth of Instagram content that showcases our weaving workshops while educating followers about Navajo culture, drives bookings for spring workshops, and builds authentic connection with our community.
Format: Mix of: behind-the-scenes workshop videos, finished weaving photos, cultural education carousels, artist spotlights, and booking call-to-actions. Include captions, hashtag suggestions, and posting schedule.
Tone: Respectful, educational, and welcoming. Authentic storytelling that honors tradition while inviting participation. Avoid romanticizing or appropriatingβfocus on real people and real stories.

Example 3: Restaurant Marketing Strategy
β Generic Prompt:
Help me market my restaurant.
β CRAFT-Enhanced Prompt:
Context: We’re a farm-to-table restaurant in a college town, open 2 years, competing with 15+ chain restaurants. Our strength is locally-sourced ingredients and seasonal menus, but students often choose cheaper chain options. We want to build a loyal customer base among both students and community members while highlighting our local partnerships.
Role: Act as a restaurant marketing consultant specializing in farm-to-table establishments in competitive college markets.
Action: Develop a 3-month marketing strategy that increases repeat customers by 40%, builds awareness of our local sourcing story, and creates sustainable competitive advantages against chain restaurants.
Format: Strategy document with: situation analysis, target customer profiles, key messaging framework, tactical marketing calendar, budget allocation recommendations, and success metrics.
Tone: Strategic and practical, focused on sustainable growth rather than quick gimmicks. Emphasize authenticity and community connection as differentiators.
Result: A comprehensive strategy that positions your restaurant as the obvious choice for customers who value quality, community, and authenticity.

The Bottom Line
If your AI outputs are feelig too generic, insist your AI do a better job with its ouputs.
The CRAFT prompt framework gives you a repeatable structure for getting results that are specific, useful, and actually sound like you.
Key Takeaways
- Prompt engineering doesn’t require a technical background β it requires clarity about what you actually want
- Context is the most skipped step and the most important one
- AI prompts that include role, format, and tone consistently outperform vague requests
- The gap between a bad AI output and a good one is almost always in the input
- Generative AI tools reward specificity β the more precise your prompt, the less the AI has to guess
If you walk away with one thing: stop asking AI to “write something good.” Tell it who you are, who you’re talking to, what you need, and how it should sound. That’s the whole game.
