Use AI to Spot Emerging Trends for 2027

“Trends to Watch” articles are already starting to emerge. AI has made them all sound remarkably similar.

The end of the year is approaching, which means obligatory “2027 Trends to Watch” articles are already starting to emerge. Every industry has them. No matter how hard you try, you’ll inevitably click on one or two.

And thanks to AI, most of them will probably sound remarkably similar, with little new to offer.

And still, if you’re a thought leader or an established industry organization, publishing a trends piece builds trust with your audience. If you’re planning to put your name on a trends report, shouldn’t you have something interesting to say?

Spot emerging trends with AI πŸ” Learn how to build a watchlist, analyze customer conversations, and track search data to see what's changing in your industry.

The good news is that AI gives you plenty of ways to investigate what’s happening in your industry. You can use it to uncover emerging patterns, connect ideas, and identify opportunities worth exploring. And write a report that doesn’t sound like AI wrote it.

The key is to look for change. What’s happening now that wasn’t happening six months ago? What’s gaining momentum? What are people starting to question?

Here are six ways to get started.

Just Ask AI (The Lazy Way)

Let’s start with the obvious. Open ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or your favorite AI tool and ask it to identify the biggest trends for your industry for 2027.

Yes, it’s the lazy approach. Your competitors are probably doing exactly the same thing. But there’s nothing wrong with using this as a starting point, especially if you’re among the first to join the annual prediction rush.

Ask AI to identify emerging trends, explain what has changed over the past year, and provide links to recent research. Then investigate the predictions that interest you.

Just don’t publish the results without checking the evidence and adding your perspective.

Create an AI-Assisted Industry Watchlist

Want to keep up with your industry without making research another full-time job?

Start with Google Alerts. Choose the topics you want to monitor, then adjust the frequency and sources to suit your needs. The trick here, though: Instead of receiving an overwhelming stream of emails, set Google Alerts to deliver results through an RSS feed.

Then use AI tools like Codex or Claude Cowork to help collect the stories and organize them in one document or spreadsheet. Depending on your setup, you can schedule recurring research that builds a collection of industry developments over time. And avoid the daily emails.

Then you can ask AI to summarize this week’s headlines and have it compare new stories with older ones.

Ask it: What topics keep appearing? What’s gaining momentum? Which issues have disappeared from the conversation? What unusual stories don’t fit the prevailing narrative?

Pay particular attention to the outliers. And don’t overlook what catches your own attention. It may not qualify as a major industry trend (or at least not yet), but if you find something intriguing, your customers might too.

AI Tip For Business Leaders

Build an industry feed that collects data for you.

Set up a Google Alert for the topic you wish to follow. (Change delivery from email to RSS feed and grab the RSS URL.) Give Claude Cowork or ChatGPT the URL and ask them to check the feed daily and add new headlines and links to a Google Doc or Notion page. As your list grows, ask AI to identify recurring themes, emerging questions, and opportunities worth exploring.

Watch What Customers Want

Shifts in what customers want often show up in their conversations long before they appear in a formal trends report. Reddit discussions, customer reviews, industry forums, and product feedback can reveal those shifts as they’re happening.

Not every AI platform has direct access to sources like Reddit and LinkedIn. You may need to collect relevant discussions yourself and copy and paste the material into AI. Then have AI compare recent conversations with those from six months or a year ago, looking for new frustrations, rising expectations, and problems that appear to be getting worse.

And pay attention to repetition across different sources. One angry customer isn’t a trend. But dozens of customers describing the same frustration across multiple platforms might be telling you something.

In AI, for example, millions of people flocked this spring to a site called Your AI Slop Bores Me, where humans pretend to be AI chatbots. It’s not a trend on its own. But as frustration with generic AI responses grows, the story may prove to be an early sign of an emerging trend.

Follow Industry Leaders

Trade associations and professional organizations are excellent sources of industry intelligence. Have AI research organizational publications, legislative priorities, annual reports, and conference agendas. Compare what they’re tesalking about today with what they were discussing last year.

Then go one step further: follow the speakers. Who’s presenting at major industry conferences? What have they published recently?

Don’t overlook breakout sessions. Sometimes the most interesting developments come from practitioners doing the work, not the famous keynote speakers.

What might have been tedious, tiresome work even a few years ago can now be relegated to your AI assistant for easy pattern matching and idea generation.

Work with Nonprofits?

If you work with nonprofits or associations, investigate their IRS Form 990 filings. AI can help you compare data across years, including program spending, revenue sources, and organizational priorities. Changes in funding and programming might reveal a shift in where an industry is headed.

Follow Search Trends

Numerous research tools can help you investigate patterns in consumer interest.

  • Google Trends lets you explore search activity over time. Use it to see whether interest in a topic is growing, fading, or experiencing seasonal spikes.
  • Tools like Semrush offer more detailed keyword and market research.
  • Explore YouTube performance using vidIQ, which can identify outlier videos: videos attracting unusually high attention compared with a channel’s typical performance.
  • Check out Amazon’s bestseller lists to see which business topics people are paying to learn about.

Some of these platforms offer Connectors (also called MCP, or Model Context Protocol), so your AI can directly access their research tools without you switching between apps.

Turn Your Research Into an AI Skill

Once you’ve figured out which sources, comparisons, and questions work for your industry, don’t start from scratch next time.

Turn your process into a reusable set of instructions your AI can follow every time you run your research. In Claude, that’s called a Skill. In ChatGPT, it might be a custom GPT or a Project. Either way, you’re teaching AI how you look for industry trends and changes.

Your instructions might include the sources you trust, how far back to look, the questions to ask, and what particular topics to flag.

Then run have your skill run monthly or quarterly. Instead of a once-a-year scramble, your trends report becomes a byproduct of research you’re doing on a regular basis.

Your Expertise Is the MVP

AI can produce a list of predictions in seconds. Your perspective is what makes that list worth reading. And ultimately, it’s what people will pay you for.

Because while trends are interesting, what really matters is β€œHow will these trends impact a business?”

So collect your trends. But pay attention to what moved you. Which predictions don’t match what you’re seeing in your own work? What are the experts overlooking? And what small changes might have much bigger consequences than anyone expects?

Then tell your audience what’s changing, why it matters, and what they should do about it. And don’t forget the most important part: Where do you fit into the picture?

Your trends report isn’t just an opportunity to demonstrate what you know. It’s an opportunity to show prospective customers how your expertise can help them prepare for what’s coming.

TL;DR: Use AI to Spot Trends

To find trends worth mentioning, use AI to track change: what’s gaining momentum, what’s fading, and what are people starting to question. Then add your own perspective and show readers how you can help them manage the changes ahead.

Key Takeaways

  • How can AI help you spot emerging trends? Use it to track change over time, comparing current news, customer conversations, and search data against what was happening six months ago.
  • Let AI connect the dots: Collect your research in one place and ask AI where sources agree, contradict, or leave questions unanswered. The best insights often live between reports.
  • Your expertise matters: AI gathers and compares the research. Your perspective turns it into a trends report worth reading, and shows readers where you fit into what’s coming.
