Workslop is Flooding Our Feeds

Workslop. It’s the blog post nobody edited. The email that’s too long, just because. The social post copied straight from ChatGPT. The newsletter that reads like a thousand others—because AI drafted it off the shoulders of thousands of mediocre inputs, and you ran with it anyway.

Workslop is what happens when you let AI set the direction, instead of the other way around.

And it’s everywhere. In your feed, your inbox, your industry. It’s crowding out signal. It’s making it harder to find real thinking, real voice, real conviction. It’s the default move for people who see AI as a shortcut instead of a tool.

What Is Workslop?

Workslop is AI-generated content where volume is mistaken for value. Usually it’s a published piece that sounds lofty but says nothing. Three years ago, it was easy to spot AI writing. Now? There’s a fine line between “AI-written” and “average writing” and it keeps getting blurry. But it’s still average writing.

It’s especially rampant on social media where the algorithms rewarded “more is better” posts. But workslop is spilling into blogs, guides, emails, proposals, meeting summaries. Any written work now has better than 80 percent odds of being AI-assisted—and not in the strategic “AI as thinking partner” way. In the “prompt and post, no editing required” way.

Why This Matters

Coverage from Harvard Business Review, Axios, CNN, and the Guardian have all laid out the impact: workslop is killing productivity. AI adoption at work has doubled since 2023, but ROI hasn’t followed. A Stanford survey found employees spend hours fixing AI drafts that look polished but lack substance.

And it’s not just wasted time—it’s wrong information. NewsGuard reports that false content rates in chatbots have jumped from 18% to 35% in just a year. A famous example: Chicago Sun-Times posted a summer reading list (via syndication). Only problem? Some books were attributed to incorrect authors, others didn’t exist at all.

Which means, we are not only drowning in volume—we’re drowning in misinformation.

If you’re positioning yourself as someone who leads boldly, does things differently, or understands your market in ways others don’t—workslop is your enemy. The moment your content sounds like everyone else’s, you’ve lost the edge that makes you uniquely valuable.

You’re Weird Al singing “Another One Rides the Bus.” Not Queen at Wembley Stadium moving thousands to their feet.

Your clients don’t hire you because you can prompt ChatGPT like a pro. They can do that themselves. They hire you because you think in ways they don’t. You see things others miss. You have conviction, insight, and lived experience that can’t be automated.

So the second your marketing sounds like everyone else who ran the same AI output, you’re telling your market: “I’m settling for good enough, not boldly different.”

How to Keep AI Outputs Uniquely Yours

  • Never post first drafts. Treat AI output like an underpainting—structure and depth, but still only the first layer.
  • Add your voice. Your lived experiences, client stories, humor, conviction. That’s what makes people listen.
  • Read it out loud. If you wouldn’t say it at a networking event, don’t publish it.
  • Get specific. Replace “in today’s fast-paced world” with what’s actually happening in your industry.
  • Give AI your voice. Upload samples, ask AI to rewrite in your style. Guardrails, not autopilot.
  • Kill the qualifiers. Words like “actually,” “literally,” “truly” scream AI—even when you meant to write them.

Isn’t AI Supposed to Save Me Time?

If this sounds like “more work,” yes, it can be. And yes, it violates the golden premise: AI can make me more productive. But as history has shown us time and again, productivity does not mean quality.

If you hired a human writer, you’d demand more. Editorial guidelines. Reviews. Edits. Sometimes many edits. Don’t let AI’s speed and promise of productivity blind you to standards. Hold AI—and yourself—to higher ones.

Use AI strategically. Not as a content machine. As a thinking partner.

🌿 🌿 🌿 🌿 🌿

The Bottom Line

Workslop is crowding the content space. The good news, there is more opportunity for original work to stand out. More white space for people who actually think.

Your work deserves better than slop. It deserves content that celebrates your voice. Your thinking. Your experience.
